A new group has formed on Cape Clear Island to host an exciting series of heritage and nature based events this summer.
Ireland’s Bioblitz is an annual event organised by the National Biodiversity Data Centre involving four to five selected sites throughout the country where groups of taxonomic experts compete to identify as many animals and plants as possible over a 24-hour period. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in this event, which is attracting increasing media attention.
Five islands are currently being chosen to take part in Bioblitz 2016; at this stage it looks as if they will include Cape and Bere Islands in West Cork, Inismore, Tory and Rathlin Islands.
The Bioblitz takes place from June 11-12 and in the preceding week, from Monday June 6, a series of heritage events are also planned. The proposal has already received enthusiastic support from the Island community.
More detailed information is available here and various other island websites so that the wider island community and its supporters can contribute to the planning of the week.
